Taylor Statham produced a huge game Saturday night, scoring 20 points with 13 rebounds as the Coyotes earned an 81-77 exhibition men's basketball victory at Cal Poly Pomona.
CSUSB (0-1 overall) begins conference play Saturday night at Humboldt State.
Statham led five Coyotes in double figures with
Gilbert Parga scoring 18,
Isaiah Morton 17,
Casey Oldemoppen 14 and
Everett Turner 10.
CSUSB shot 47.5 percent from the floor, including a 51.7 percent (15-of-29) second-half effort.
The Coyotes utilized an 11-0 run midway through the first half, thanks to seven straight points from Parga, and CSUSB led 24-17 with 8:20 to go.
The contest was tight the entire second as it never became more than a two-possession game.
Statham hit a 3-pointer to give CSUSB a 76-74 lead wtih 2:29 left.
After Britton Williams tied the game for the ninth and final time with 1:21 left, Oldemoppen scored after he controlled an offensive rebound. Parga followed with a free throw and the Coyotes led 79-76 with seven seconds left.
A free throw by Williams cut the lead to two, but on an inbounds play with two seconds left, Morton scored and the Coyotes had the win.
