Box Score SAN BERNARDINO – No. 19 Cal State San Bernardino answered two big runs in the second half in its game against No. 21 Chico State and held on for an 84-81 victory at Coussoulis Arena on Friday night.
Senior
Andrew Young scored 17 points with 11 rebounds and three others scored in double figures as the Coyotes won their eighth consecutive game. They will take an 8-1 overall record and perfect 5-0 mark in the CCAA in Saturday's contest against Cal State Stanislaus.
The Coyotes kept two impressive streaks alive against the Wildcats (7-2, 3-2) and ended a rather ignominious one. They shot 50 percent from the field (30 of 60) for the fifth straight game – a first in the 12-year reign of coach
Jeff Oliver – and they have now led the entire second half for a fifth straight game.
And they ended a five-game losing streak against the Wildcats.
But it was anything but easy.
The Coyotes'
Lacy Haddock gave his team what seemed to be an insurmountable 12-point lead (74-62) with a layup with 5:17 remaining.
That's when the Wildcats came alive as they came back with a 14-3 run and cut the Coyotes' lead to 77-76 on Rashad Parker's 3-pointer with 2:29 left in the game.
Young, Haddock and
Kirby Gardner combined to hit five straight free throws and CSUSB led 82-76 with 1:33 left.
Chico State, though, responded with a three-point play from Amir Carraway and after a missed 3-pointer by Haddock, the Wildcats had a shot to tie with 3-point marksman Sean Park offering a shot from the left wing with 39 seconds left.
His shot was off and after Carraway followed with a shot that was blocked by Young, the Coyotes'
Zeke DeBlase hit two free throws sandwiched around a Jordan Semple layup and CSUSB had its victory.
The Coyotes, who led for only 76 seconds in the first half, got going in the early second half.
After a Semple 3-pointer brought the Wildcats to within a point, the Coyotes answered with a 10-0 run thanks to a pair of 3-pointers from
Jordan Burris and led 65-54 with 8:41 left.
They led by as many as 13 – a DeBlase 3-pointer gave the Coyotes a 70-57 advantage with 7:19 left.
Haddock continues to play at a high level with a high degree of indefatigability. He played the entire game and finished with 15 points, five assists, two steals and three blocks – the biggest occurring late in the game after he sank two free throws that gave CSUSB a 81-76 lead.
Burris was stellar in only his fifth game with CSUSB. He had 16 points including four 3-pointers. Senior
Kirby Gardner was the other Coyote in double figures, scoring 13 with five rebounds and four assists.
Semple led the Wildcats with a game-high 26 points off the bench.
