Young leads with 20 as Coyotes earn 14th straight win

Andrew Young missed out on a double-double with 20 points and 9 rebounds.
Box Score SAN BERNARDINO – The No. 8-ranked Coyotes fired on all cylinders Friday night.

CSUSB earned its largest margin of victory in five seasons, and led by senior Andrew Young's 20 points, routed visiting Cal State L.A. 92-51 in CCAA play at Coussoulis Arena.

The 41-point margin was the biggest victory for the Coyotes since a 96-54 win over Academy of Art on Dec. 21, 2008.

CSUSB, which increased its winning streak to 14 games, ran away from CSULA on this night in the early going. Up 12-8 with 15:26 remaining in the first half, the Coyotes dominated over the next 12-plus minutes with an awe-inspiring 29-6 run that put them well in control.

Eight different Coyotes contributed in that pivotal run with senior Kirby Gardner leading the way with six of his total 13 points. He also had three rebounds, four assists and hit 7-of-8 free throws.

Young had a monster game himself as the Monterey native was 8-of-9 from the floor and missed out on a double-double with nine rebounds. He also had three steals in only 21 minutes.

Junior Juan Martinez added 14 (with three 3-pointers).

The Coyotes went into the break leading 43-21 and any kind of a letdown went for naught as CSUSB extended its lead to 48 points when Martinez hit a three-pointer that gave his team a 92-44 lead with 2:32 left.

Senior guard Lacy Haddock had eight points and five assists, but was masterful on the defensive end as he held CSULA's leading scorer Quinton Watkins scoreless. The Golden Eagles' guard entered play averaging 19.9 points a game.

Senior Jordan Burris had nine points with nine rebounds and four assists in 22 minutes. Junior Taylor Statham had nine points and senior Joshua Gouch had seven.

The Coyotes set several defensive season-bests including fewest points in a first half (21), fewest total points (51), fewest field goals made (16) and field goal percentage (28.1 percent).

CSUSB returns to Coussoulis Arena on Saturday night against Cal State Dominguez Hills.

CSULA (10-5, 7-4) was led by James Tillman's 22 points.
