Coyotes need 3 OTs before ending UCSD's night

Johnny Bell's offensive rebound and put-back gave the Coyotes a 70-69 lead with 50 seconds remaining in regulation.

SAN BERNARDINO -- Three overtimes, 15 lead changes and 10 ties can age a person in a hurry.

It can even wear out a new, freshly starched oxford dress shirt. Just ask coach Jeff Oliver.

In what is believed to be a record for most overtimes in school history, the Coyotes persevered and earned an epic victory over a pesky UC San Diego Tritons squad in a 102-99 triple overtime victory in the opening round of the CCAA Tournament on Tuesday night at Coussoulis Arena.

Lacy Haddock and Kwame Alexander each scored 22 points and junior Brian Goins was right behind with 20 for the Coyotes, who now advance to the tournament semifinals where they will face Chico State at 8 p.m. Friday night at Citizens Business Bank Arena.

On a night where the Coyotes struggled at the free throw line, their automatic inside the final five minutes -- Haddock -- iced the game in the final 24 seconds.

Haddock, who leads the Coyotes in free throw percentage at 80 percent, is even better in the final five minutes of play, hitting 85 percent.

CSUSB was a collective 13-of-28 before Haddock went to the line with 24 seconds to go in the third OT. He hit both shots, then after UCSD's James McCann hit a 3-pointer, Haddock went right back to the line to hit two more and CSUSB was up 102-99 with nine seconds left.

The Coyotes did not allow the Tritons to set up a potential game-tying three as Haddock fouled McCann with five seconds to go. He missed both shots and the Coyotes held on for the win.

McCann's jumper with 90 seconds remaining in regulation put the Coyotes down, 69-64.

Junior Joshua Gouch hit a jumper to pull the Coyotes to within three and then, Alexander stepped up.

The two-time All-CCAA performer stripped the ball away from McCann and drove down the court and threw down a dunk and was fouled.

Alexander missed the free throw, but Johnny Bell came up with the offensive rebound and scored on a putback and CSUSB had its first lead at 70-69 with 50 seconds left.

On UCSD's next possession, McCann was fouled but the 90 percent free throw shooter missed the front end of a two-shot foul. He made the second and the game was tied at 70 with 28 seconds left.

The Coyotes held the ball and Haddock retained possession, but his shot with time running out was block, forcing the game into the first overtime.

In the first OT, Alexander hit a jumper that put the Coyotes up 79-76 with 18 seconds left, but UCSD's Hunter Walker buried a 3-pointer with six seconds left and the game was extended again.

McCann gave the Tritons an 84-79 when he hit a 3 with 3:25 left in double OT. Goins followed with a jumper and after UCSD went up 85-81 on Walker's free throw, Goins cut the lead to two with a layup with 1:51 left.

After a McCann turnovers on a steal from Gouch, Alexander hit a jumper to tie the game at 85-85 with 1:09 left.

On the next possession, Johnny Bell stole the ball from McCann, but the senior lost control of the ball in the backcourt and UCSD had a chance for the win with 36 seconds left.

The Tritons worked the clock and Walker's attempt with two seconds was off, forcing the third OT.

Justin Brue tied the game at 88-88 on a jumper, but that set the tone for the Coyotes in the game's final 3 minutes.

A dunk from Alexander, who then hit the and-one put CSUSB up by three, 91-88 and the Coyotes held the lead for the remainder of the game, despite McCann cutting the lead to 101-99 with 11 seconds left on a 3-pointer.

The Coyotes' 102 points marked the first time CSUSB broke the century mark since its 2007 Elite Elight opening-round win over Wingate, 100-73.

The Tritons, who finished the season 11-15, were led by McCann with 27 points and 11 assists. Brue had 22 and Drew Dyer had 16.

For the Coyotes, now 19-7, Bell finished with seven points, a team-high nine rebounds and five steals along with two blocks and three assists.

Haddock dealt seven assists and Gouch finished with 10 points.
