Box Score
LAS VEGAS, Nev. – Two significant scoring runs and solid 3-point shooting were the Coyotes' storylines in Sunday's 85-65 victory over No. 19 Midwestern State as the first-half of the 2013-14 season came to a close at the South Point Holiday Classic.
Senior
Jordan Burris scored a season-high 24 points on 9-of-11 shooting and a perfect 4 of 4 from the 3-point line in only 22 minutes of work. It was the Bakersfield native's fourth straight double-figure game after missing the first four games of the season due to an injured leg.
CSUSB, now 7-1 overall and winners of seven straight, got going after trailing 8-2 in the early going.
A 26-6 run with seven Coyotes contributing put CSUSB out front for good. Burris had seven points in the stretch and senior
Lacy Haddock and junior
Juan Martinez each had five in the run and CSUSB led 28-14 with 7:37 left in the half.
Then after Midwestern State (8-3) got within seven points, the Coyotes found another gear once again and finished the first half on a 15-4 run – thanks to three 3-pointers by Haddock,
Kirby Gardner and
Taylor Statham and the Coyotes led 44-26 at the break.
The lead was never fewer than 15 points in the second half.
Once again, quality shooting was the difference and it made history for 12
th-year head coach
Jeff Oliver. The Coyotes shot 50 percent on 29-of-58 shooting and secured for the first time in the Oliver era that one of his teams shot at least 50 percent in four straight games.
CSUSB had 11 3-pointers with five different Coyotes hitting from outside. Haddock, Martinez and Statham each had two and Gardner had the other.
Andrew Young was again a big presence in the middle with 16 points. Martinez had 12 and Statham 10.
Monzaigo Williams led Midwestern State with 23 points.
CSUSB is idle during the Christmas break and returns to Coussoulis Arena on Jan. 3 when the Coyotes face Chico State.
