Box Score
LAS VEGAS, Nev. – It could very well be that just seven games into the 2013-14 season, the Coyotes earned themselves a coveted signature victory on Saturday afternoon.

Senior Andrew Young paced the unranked Coyotes with 24 points on 10-of-15 shooting and junior reserve Taylor Statham scored a career-high 19 points as CSUSB stunned No. 5 and two-time defending NCAA West Region champion Western Washington 99-91 in tourney play at the South Point Holiday Classic.

The victory was CSUSB's sixth straight and improved its record to 6-1 overall. It also marked the first time in seven seasons the Coyotes defeated a top-five foe since the 2007 West Region title victory over fourth-ranked Humboldt State in Arcata.

The difference maker was the second half in which the Coyotes hit 61.5 percent from the floor and were even more impressive at the line, hitting 20-of-23 shots, an 87-percent clip.

Young scored 14 first-half points to lead nine Coyotes in the scoring column in the opening 20 minutes. Both Statham and senior guard Lacy Haddock had seven points in the first half as CSUSB led by as many as 11.

WWU mounted a 15-5 run and got to within a point on Richard Woodworth's free throws with 1:09 left and the Coyotes up 40-39.

But the Coyotes immediately responded with junior Christian Cooper's layup and Haddock's 3-point play inside the final minute and the Coyotes led 45-39 at the break.

Coach Jeff Oliver's team never let the lead get fewer than four points in the second half and gained substantial control in a pivotal five-minute run at the 15:11mark.

Up 56-51, Statham – whose previous career high was 10 last season – equaled that number in four minutes and 50 seconds and helped distance CSUSB past WWU, 76-60 with 10:22 left.

WWU got as close as four (86-82) with 3:13 left, but the Coyotes kept the Vikings at bay, hitting nine of 10 free throws down the stretch for the win.

Senior Jordan Burris scored 17 points in just his third game with a team-high eight rebounds and Haddock reached double figures for the seventh straight game with 12 points and a game-high nine assists.

Helping out CSUSB was Cooper, who hit seven points off the bench in 15 minutes. He entered the game with just one point in just two minutes of play this season.

Woodworth led the Vikings (8-1) with a game-high 30 points – 24 in the second half.

It was an entertaining game as both teams shot hit at least 50 percent from the field – CSUSB (34-65, 52.3 percent and WWU (30 of 60).

It was the third straight game the Coyotes hit at least 50 percent from the floor – a first since late in the 2009-10 season.

The Coyotes complete the weekend Sunday against No. 19 Midwestern State of Wichita Falls, Texas. Tipoff is 1 p.m.
