POMONA – The Coyotes-Cal Poly Pomona series is known for its back-and-forth swings.
In a game where neither team had more than a three-point lead for much of the second half, the Coyotes capitalized on the
game's only spurt and walked away with a 62-53 victory at Kellogg Gym on Wednesday night.
Senior post
Andrew Young earned his first double-double of the season, registering game highs of 16 points and 10 rebounds with an 8-for-8 effort from the free throw line that helped push the Coyotes to a 3-1 overall mark and league-leading 2-0 record in the CCAA.
The game featured 17 lead changes and eight ties until CSUSB created momentum with 5:57 remaining in the game.
Tied at 47-47, junior
Tevin Harris scored a jumper that triggered a 12-2 run. The Coyotes stopped the Broncos cold, holding their opponent to seven straight missed shots in that stretch.
CSUSB had a pair of 3-pointers from
Kirby Gardner and freshman
Khleem Perkins, Young offered a layup and Gardner again came through with two free throws and the Coyotes led 59-49 with 2:34 left.
The game was sloppy at times as the teams totaled 31 turnovers (CSUSB-18, CPP-13).
Senior
Lacy Haddock followed Young with 13 points, but was held without an assist for the first time in his two-year Coyote career. Gardner had 11 points, eight rebounds and four assists in his most complete game of the young season.
The Coyotes' defense came through when it had to as a
Jeff Oliver-coached team improved to 95-3 all-time record when holding its opponent to fewer than 60 points.
Senior
Joshua Gouch provided a steady piece of play with four points, five rebounds, a game-high three blocks and two steals in 21 minutes.
CPP's tandem of DeRonn Scott and Jordan Faison were just 7 of 32 from the floor as the Coyotes held the Broncos (2-3, 0-1) to just 31.3 percent field goals on 20-for-64 shooting.
CSUSB is off for the Thanksgiving break and returns Dec. 7 at Humboldt State.
