Box Score Box Score: Coyotes 67, No. 6 Cal Poly Pomona 63
POMONA -- Solid outside shooting is one of the best ways to fluster a zone defense and what Coyotes' coach
Jeff Oliver received from his team Saturday night made the Coyotes victorious.
Four guards combined for 12 3-pointers and senior
Juan Martinez' season-high four treys led the way as the Coyotes earned their eighth-consecutive victory in a 67-63 win over previously unbeaten and No. 6 Cal Poly Pomona before a crowd of 1,204 at Kellogg Gym.
The Coyotes outscored the Broncos 36-12 from 3-point range and led for all but a minute in the second half for their first win over a top-10 ranked team in six seasons.
Junior
Lacy Haddock played all 40 minutes and led the Coyotes with 13 points and four assists. He had three 3-pointers and sophomore
Jamari Simmons had 11 points with three 3's.
The Coyotes (8-1 overall, 5-0 CCAA) relied upon their outside game in the first half as nine of their 11 field goals were from 3-point range. An 11-2 run inside the final six minutes in the half put CSUSB up 32-21 with 3:28 remaining.
Martinez, Haddock and Simmons each had threes in that stretch and the Coyotes led 35-30 at halftime.
The Coyotes led by as many as nine (41-32) with 16:53 remaining, but CPP (9-1, 5-1) came back and cut the lead to one on two occasions. The Broncos grabbed their only lead of the second half on senior preseason All-American Mitchel Anderson's sole 3-pointer of the game -- 55-53 with 8:19 to go.
The momentum swung back CSUSB's way when
Kwame Alexander hit one free throw. His second was off, but Simmons was in position for the rebound and his putback was good and the Coyotes took the lead for good, 56-55 with 7:04 left.
CPP got to within a point twice, but each time junior
Joshua Gouch extended the lead.
After Terence Drisdom's 3-pointer brought CPP within one at 58-57, Gouch followed with a layup and CSUSB led 60-57 with 5:12 left.
Then Gouch answered with a 3-point play after Shannon Sharpe's layup and the Coyotes led 63-59 with 2:29 remaining.
CSUSB held a 7-point lead with 1:47 left, but CPP came back and got to within one possession of the lead after Sharpe's two free throws put the score 66-63 with 45 seconds left.
An errant 3-pointer by CSUSB's
Brian Goins allowed the Broncos a chance to tie. Anderson put up a 3-point attempt with eight seconds left, but the shot was off the mark and Alexander grabbed the rebound and was fouled.
He hit the second of two shots and the Coyotes had their first win at CPP since Jan. 12, 2010, when CSUSB handed the Broncos a 66-58 defeat.
The win almost assuredly will place the Coyotes among the top 25 poll next week -- their first appearance in five seasons.
Alexander had nine points and a team-high 10 rebounds with three assists.
Drisdom scored a game-high 19 points for CPP, which had its school-record nine-game winning streak to open a season end.
