Second half belongs to Coyotes in 71-59 win

Alexander scores career-high 26 points

Kwame Alexander's 26-point, 13-rebound effort was his third double-double of the season.
Box Score HAYWARD – Senior Kwame Alexander scored a career-high 26 points as Cal State San Bernardino controlled the second half of play in the Coyotes' 71-59 win over host Cal State East Bay in CCAA men's basketball Friday night.

The victory ended the Coyotes' two-game losing streak and they will take a 9-3 overall record and 7-2 CCAA slate into Saturday's game at Cal State Monterey Bay.

The Coyotes began their program's longest CCAA road swing in history in tremendous style, especially with their play in the second half. They shot 56.5 percent from the floor and scored 20 points off 13 CSUEB turnovers in the final 20 minutes for the decisive win.

Alexander was nine-of-16 from the floor and was eight-of-10 from the line in earning his best offensive night of his career. His previous high was 24 against Cal State Monterey Bay on Dec. 29, 2010. He entered play hitting only nine of his last 23 attempts.

His 13 boards were one shy of his career high.

Junior Brian Goins added 12 points in 37 minutes and junior Joshua Gouch had 10 points and five rebounds off the bench.

Defensively, the Coyotes held the Pioneers (5-8, 4-5) to just 18 field goals and forced a season-best 23 turnovers – always a sign of dominance.

They improved to 2-0 on the season when they hold their opponent to fewer than 60 points and an impressive 93-3 all-time under head coach Jeff Oliver, who incidentally coached his 300th game as CSUSB head coach.

The teams went into halftime tied at 30 and the Coyotes grabbed control when they went ahead 36-35 on Taylor Statham's free throw with 16:41 remaining.

Leading 51-48 with 7:16 left, the Coyotes iced the game on a 7-0 run thanks to a pair of dunks from Alexander and Johnny Bell, who gave the Coyotes a 10-point lead with 5:27 left.

Jacari Whitfield led the Pioneers with 11 points.
