TURLOCK – Finishing a game is one of the most difficult tasks a coach can ask from a team.
That's why Coyotes men's basketball coach
Jeff Oliver walked off the court Saturday night a happy man as his team earned its first comeback victory this season with a 75-72 win over host Cal State Stanislaus in CCAA play.
The Coyotes earned their first victory when trailing with five minutes to play in stellar fashion. Down 68-58 with 7:48 remaining, the Coyotes found another gear by not allowing a Warrior field goal for the remainder of the game. Offensively, CSUSB ran off 11 unanswered points in exactly five minutes and led 72-70 on two free throws from
Johnny Bell with 1:11 left.
Each team traded two free throws – two from CSUS's Reggie Jones and two from the Coyotes'
Theron Laudermill before
Matt Wallace pushed CSUSB up 75-72 on the front end of a two-shot foul with 10 seconds left.
CSUS fired off a 3-pointer that was off the mark and had another opportunity with less than a second remaining. The Warriors could not get a shot off before the buzzer as the Coyotes improved to 7-4 overall and 6-2 in the CCAA.
More importantly, they earned their fourth CCAA road win in five games as they now return to Coussoulis Arena for a four-game home stand that begins Friday against Cal State Monterey Bay.
Seniors Tre Brewer and
Theron Laudermill each had 16 points. Brewer was 6 of 12 from the field and Laudermill was 5 of 7 and hit 6 of 7 free throws. Wallace had 13 points on four 3-pointers and junior
Kwame Alexander had 10 points with a team-high nine rebounds.
The Coyotes led for nearly the entire first half until Marcus Walters' layup with 15 seconds remaining gave the Warriors a 40-39 lead at the break. They led by as many as 11 and not until Bell's clutch throws would the Coyotes lead again.
Ronnie Sawyer had 16 for the Warriors, now 8-4, 4-4.
