Box Score

CARSON — Cal State Dominguez Hills never led the entire regulation in Friday's night California Collegiate Athletic Association contest with Cal State San Bernardino, and it didn't need to in an 86-84 overtime win.

The Coyotes (16-7, 14-5 CCAA) for the most part controlled the game from the opening tip until about the 1:40 mark in the second half. Cory Caston, who finished with 18 points, had just hit a 3-pointer to put CSUSB up 73-67.

The Toros' Maquintise Davis then hit back-to-back jumpers to make it 73-71 with 30 seconds left, but the ball was still in the hands of the Coyotes at the free throw line. David Jefferson stepped to the line with a chance to hit two free throws and put it out of reach. Jefferson sank the first, but the second bounced off the rim and into the hands of Michael Cox of CSUDH. Cox kicked it out to Jamel Ward who put up a buzzer beater to force overtime.

Still the Toros had not led.

Even in overtime, the Coyotes jumped out to a 77-74 lead thanks to a Tyson Lawrence jumper and another Jefferson free throw. They also led 79-76 on a Bryan LeDuc jumper that gave him his team-high 19th point of the night.

The Toros fired back with a Tim McLaurin trey to tie it at 79, but Jefferson put the lead back in favor of CSUSB at 81-79.

It wasn't until the 2:02 mark when McLaurin buried a trey that gave Cal State Dominguez Hills its first lead at 82-81 and Ward made it 83-81 with a free throw. CSUSB retook the lead when Lawrence hit a trey that swung momentum back to CSUSB and gave the Coyotes an 84-83 lead with 1:44 left, but that was the last point they scored.

The Toros hit three free throws and the Coyotes missed two 3-point attempts in the final stretch as CSUDH moved into a tie for second place with Cal State San Bernardino.

Cal Poly Pomona and Humboldt State both picked up wins and now have a two-way tie for first place.

The Coyotes shot 44.1 percent from the field and turned the ball over just seven times. The Toros shot 55.6 percent from the field and were 10-for-19 from beyond the arc. CSUDH also out rebounded CSUSB 37-23.

Cal State San Bernardino travels for the last time this season in CCAA play when it takes on Cal State L.A. in the Eagles' Nest tomorrow night at 7:30 p.m.
