ARCATA — Humboldt State shot 51 percent from the field and 45 percent from beyond the arc to knock off the top team in the California Collegiate Athletic Association in Cal State San Bernardino, 71-67.
The loss by the Coyotes (16-6, 14-4 CCAA) combined with a win by Cal Poly Pomona at Sonoma State creates a log jam atop the conference standings with CSUSB, the Broncos and the Lumberjacks tied for first.
HSU led by 18 at end of the first half and led 59-44 with 8:39 left in the game before a 6-0 run brought the deficit down to single digits for the first time since the 7:13 mark in the first half.
The Jacks answered to push the lead back out to 65-52, but CSUSB didn't go away.
After
Corey Caston sank a pair of free throws,
Aaron Hill drained a three with 3:29 left to make it 65-57 game.
Bryan LeDuc, who scored a team-high 17 points, then hit a pair from the charity strip with 2:56 left to bring CSUSB within six at 65-59.
HSU pushed it out to an 8-point lead with just under a minute to play, but Hill again hit a three and then
David Jefferson converted on a turnover to pull within three, at 67-64, with 47 seconds left. The Jacks scored on a layup to lead 69-64 with 10 seconds left, but CSUSB stayed in the contest with a
Steven Gaston trey with two seconds left to make it 69-67. That was as close as the Coyotes came as HSU closed out the game with two free throws.
LeDuc missed just one shot from the field, going 6-for-7 and was 4-for-5 at the line. He also pulled down seven rebounds. Caston added 13 points, five rebounds and five steals.
Aaron Hill chipped in with 12 points and
Devon Davis scored 10 points and tied LeDuc for a team-high seven rebounds.
HSU's Kevin Atkins led all scorers with 21 points.
The Coyotes close out the four-game road swing against Cal State Dominguez Hills, Friday, and Cal State L.A., Saturday.
