This week in Yotes athletics, basketball is back in Coussoulis Arena and Saturday hosts the biggest NCAA Div. II men's basketball showdown in California!
The most anticipated game of the season in Coussoulis Arena is on Saturday as No. 5 Yotes (13-1, 7-1 CCAA) takes on No. 4 Cal State San Marcos (12-0, 8-0 CCAA) for a NCAA Div. II top-5 clash at 3 pm! The Yotes continue to build on the best start since the 2013-14 season. The CCAA standings are in a scramble at the top three spots as Chico State was toppled by Cal State San Marcos last week. The Yotes are currently No. 2 in the CCAA while Cal State San Marcos stands at No. 1.
The Yotes are the CCAA conference's top offensive team, averaging 89.5 points per game while CSUSM is the CCAA defensive team leader, giving up just 62.6 points a game. In this match, top-10 CCAA scorers will be competing against each-other. Brandon Knapper continues to lead the CCAA in scoring with 21.9 ppg. Cal State San Marcos top scorer sits at No. 5 in scoring with 16.8 ppg. CSUSB has Daytone Jenning at No. 6 in scoring at 15.9 ppg and CSUSM has Jayce McCain at No. 8 in scoring with 15.2 ppg. Also on Saturday, the women's basketball team starts the day of competition for the Yotes at 1p.m. as they take on No. 2 in CCAA standings Cal State San Marcos as they continue to push for a position in the post season.
Before Saturdays' basketball showdown, on Thursday women's basketball (6-8, 3-5 CCAA) return's from their road trip where they nabbed their first away victory. In their first game on the road, the Yotes downed the Humboldt State Lumberjacks, 63-51. At this point in the season with their current overall record, they are moving up in the ranks of the CCAA and currently stand in eight place. Top six teams in the CCAA make it to the post season. This Thursday, Jan 20th they face Cal State LA in Coussoulis Arena at 5:30 pm.
The No. 5 Men's Basketball team will NOT be competing in Coussoulis Arena this Thursday. The game scheduled with Cal State LA has been CANCELED.
