Decisive Fifth Set Goes Against The Yotes

ROHNERT PARK, CA – In their first trip to NorCal this season, the Yotes looked to avenge themselves after their previous visit to the Sonoma State campus resulted in a 3-1 loss.

After a back-and-forth battle in the early points of the first set between the CCAA opponents, the Seawolves were able to string together enough points to take the first set victory. The story was much of the same in the second set with the Seawolves holding the lead throughout the entire set. Despite the Yotes best efforts on the offensive and defensive ends, they couldn't find their rhythm.

That changed in the third set as the Yotes had their backs against the wall and their work cut out for them. The Yotes block proved to be trouble for the Seawolves as three consecutive stuff blocks would give the Yotes an 8-1 lead. They took the third set in dominating fashion, with a score of 25-18, to avoid the sweep and force a fourth set. It was a tightly contested set between both squads. A monstrous swing by Trinity Sheridan for her 15th kill of the night gave the Yotes the lead as she tried to will the Yotes to a fifth set. Through the first 20 points, this set alone featured nine ties with the largest lead by either team being only two points. While the Seawolves were the first to reach the 20-point mark, the Yotes bounced back after a timeout and went on an unanswered five-point run to take the lead before a hitting error by the Seawolves forced a fifth set.

The Yotes were in familiar territory going into the winner-take-all fifth set. A setting error by the Yotes would put the Seawolves in the lead at the halfway point in the set. A block at the net gave the Yotes a much-needed point to keep the Yotes in the game. Despite a late push, it wasn't enough to outlast the Seawolves and the Yotes would take their first loss of the season.
