      Junior point guard Corey Caston had a season-high 20 points and senior center Greg Williams equaled his career high with 16 Friday night as Cal State San Bernardino pulled away from a tenacious Cal State L.A. team for a 76-62 CCAA men's basketball victory before 642 fans in Coussoulis Arena.
    Caston scored 12 of his points in the second half as the Coyote broke up a tight game with a 9-0 run to take a 61-51 lead with 7:32 left. Williams had 12 of his 16 points in the first half and grabbed six rebounds, all in the first half as the Coyotes took a  38-33 lead to the locker room at intermission.
    The victory kept the Coyotes in first place in the CCAA at 7-1 (9-3 overall) while Cal State L.A. is now 9-4 overall and 5-3 in the CCAA. CSUSB hosts Cal State Dominguez Hills, a 59-48 winner at Cal Poly Pomona on Friday night at 7:30 p.m. Saturday. L.A. will be at Pomona.
    Carl Hoffman had a game-high 16 points and five rebounds to lead Cal State L.A. Dwayne Jones had 12 points while Chris Fields had 11 points, nine rebounds and six assists.
    CSUSB shot 51 percent from the field (28 of 55) while L.A. shot 40 percent (23 of 57).
    Cal State San Bernardino opendd up a 10-point lead at 29-19 in the first half on a layup by Bryan LeDuc (10 points, two assists, two steals) but the Golden Eagles fought back to only trail by five, 38-33, at the half as Hoffman scored on a layup with 30 seconds left.
    L.A. got within one at 38-37 early in the second half on another layup by Hoffman but the Coyotes extended their lead to 48-41 on Williams' layup with 13:43 remaining in the game. However, the Golden Eagles put together a 7-0 run  on two free throws by Fields and a free throw by Mark Dorsey to take the lead 49-48 with 11:45 remaining.
    Devon Davis (10 points, four rebounds, two assists, three blocked shots and a steal) then put the Coyotes back in front 50-49 with a jumper on the base line and Aaron Hill followed with two free throws for a 52-49 Coyote lead and they never trailed again.
    After Nuno Furtado sank two free throws to make it 52-51, the Coyotes went on a 9-0 run capped by Caston's layup after a steal by Hill to lead 61-51 with 7:32 remaining.
    Two free throws by Caston with 3:00 left in the game gave the Coyotes an insurmountable 70-55 lead.
    Lawrence Tyson (12 points, six rebounds, two assists and two blocked shots) closed out the scoring for the Coyotes with two jumpers in the final two minutes when the issue was no longer in doubt.
    The Coyotes have now won nine of their last 10 games since opening the season 0-2.
    CSUSB scored 20 points off L.A. turnovers and the Coyote bench outscored L.A's reserves 21-10.
    COYOTES NOTES -- At halftime, Coyote Athletics honored members of the CSUSB Faculty on Faculty Appreciation NIght.  CSUSB President Al Karnig along with Provost Andy Bodman and Faculty Athletic Representative Dr. Dwight Sweeney presented awards to the faculty members nominated by the school's NCAA-sponsored sports teams. The recipients and the team that nominated them were:
