Cal State L.A. scored the first three goals of the match en route to a 3-1 CCAA conference men's soccer victory over host Cal State San Bernardino Friday afternoon at Coyote Premier Field.
Jason Swope, Kristian Gaustad and Spencer Tripp scored for the Golden Eagles, now 10-0-1 overall and 8-0-1 in the CCAA and ranked No. 1 in the West Region and No.2 in the nation. The Coyotes' record dropped to 8-3 overall and 4-3 in the CCAA.
Freshman
Demetri Burgos scored his first collegiate goal for the Coyotes in the 76th minute to make the final 3-1.
CSUSB, ranked No. 5 in the West Region, hosts defending national champion Cal State Dominguez Hills at 2 p.m. Sunday, while the Golden Eagles play at Cal Poly Pomona.
The Golden Eagles defense was nearly perfect, limiting the normally-productive Coyotes to just three shots the entire match. Tobias Hummel was called upon for one save in goal for L.A.
The one defensive lapse by L.A. cost Hummel a shutout. CSUSB's
Julian Garcia found Burgos alone at the 18 yard line on the near side of the goal and he volleyed a low shot past Hummel that struck the net inside the far post 14 minutes from end time.
L.A had 10 shots and CSUSB keeper
Arath De La Rocha stopped four tries.
