LACEY, WA. – Saint Martin's University handed Cal State San Bernardino a 1-0 defeat Saturday, scoring the winning goal three minutes into the first overtime of the Saints' season opener.
The loss left the Coyotes at 0-1-1 after the first week of regular season play while the Saints are 1-0.
The Coyotes had their chances, getting off 13 shots including some that came close or hit the post, but nothing went in the net. Saint Martin's came away a winner when Jessica Wilson chipped a ball from outside the box over Coyotes goalkeeper
Laura Lyons for the match-winner at 93:13.
The Saints had just seven shots in the match and and Lyons stopped four of them. Ashley Engel saved seven shots for the Saints and two other Coyotes shots were cleared by her teammates.
Head Coach Diego Bocanegra said the Coyotes came out sluggish after a spirited 1-1 double-overtime tie with the nation's No. 4 team – Seattle Pacific – on Thursday night.
“We really took it to them (Saint Martin's) in the second half but we had nothing to show for it,” Bocanegra said.
