It has been 20 years since Kim Cherniss took the reigns of the Cal State San Bernardino and over the past two decades the 2008 AVCA NCAA Division II Coach of the Year, three-time AVCA West Region and CCAA Coach of the Year has built a powerhouse in women’s volleyball. Her first season was 1991-92, the year CSUSB joined the CCAA and moved up from NCAA Division III to Division II.
Since 1996, her Coyote teams have a record of 346-64 overall and 218-42 in the CCAA, winning over 80 percent of their games during that period. She has led the Coyotes to the NCAA West Regional in each of the past 10 seasons, reaching the final four in three of those seasons.
Her 2008 team went 30-4, won the CCAA for the third straight year and sixth time in the last eight years, then won the West Regional for the third time and advanced to the NCAA championship match for the first time in the history of the program, losing to Concordia-St. Paul, 3-2, in the title match in St. Paul, Minn.
Last season the Coyotes compiled a 33-2 record and went to their second straight national semifinals. The 33 wins was a school record at the Division II level. CSUSB also went 21-1 in CCAA play, setting a school record for conference wins in a single-season.
Cherniss picked up her 400th career win in 2009 with a 3-0 win over San Francisco State, Oct. 10. She enters the 2010 season with a 415-177 career record. Over the past 11 seasons Cherniss has coached 20 AVCA All-Americans and eight Daktronics All-Americans. She coached back-to-back AVCA Players of the Year with Kim Morohunfola in 2003 and Brianna Harris in 2004. She also coached the 2005 AVCA Freshman of the Year in Traci Weamer. No less than five Coyotes have been named All-CCAA in each of the past five seasons.
Also in 2009, Danny Scott was named the Division II Assistant Coach of the Year.
Cherniss was a two-time all-America selection at UC Riverside. She was a member of the Highlanders’ 1982 NCAA championship team. She was inducted into the UCR Sports Hall of Fame in 1991, the same year she began coaching the Coyotes.
She is a 1986 graduate of UC Riverside and received her California teaching credential in physical education in 1993.
Cherniss began her coaching career as head coach of a professional team in France. She helps coach club volleyball for age group players at the Rancho Valley Club in Rancho Cucamonga along with her assistant coach, Danny Scott.
She also played two years of pro ball with the San Bernardino Jazz.
Cherniss and her husband, Pete, a teacher at Riverside Poly High, along with their daughter, Jordan, reside in Yucaipa.
