Coyote Spirit History:
Coyote Spirit cheerleader program began when CSUSB students decided that Cal State San Bernardino's growing athletics program was in need of support and enthusiasm. The organization of the team was left up to its founders and their performances were limited to a few cheers at home basketball games.

However, since the cheer squad represented something of value and created more interest in CSUSB athletics, the Athletics Department began assisting with the growth and development of Coyote Spirit. A coach/advisor was hired and tryouts were conducted.

Since the beginning, the program has evolved into a group consisting of 10 to 20 members who earn their positions through annual tryouts.

For several years, the group included cheer and dance teams, holding each member to a certain standard of performing cheers, dance routines, students and tumbling. Emphasis was placed on individual and team improvement, body conditioning and performance preparation.

The torch of leadership was passed on to SuzAnne McDonald at the beginning of the 2003-04 seasons. McDonald is the cheer advisor with Cameron Faust-Silvas as the team's coach. CSUSB spirit has won numerous awards with The United Spirit Association; three consecutive first place, all-girl plaques, superior evaluations, dance star finalists, all-star finalists and Grand Champion in 2009. The program has grown to unbelievable heights since McDonald and Faust-Silvas have taken over leadership of the program.

Mascot (Cody Coyote)
Cal State San Bernardino was founded in 1965 but did not field NCAA intercollegiate sports teams until 1984-85. For the first 19 years of its existent, CSUSB's official mascot was a Saint Bernard.

When CSUSB launched its intercollegiate sports program, the campus mascot was changed to the Coyote, an animal prevalent in the foothills behind the campus.

A furry-uniformed Coyote mascot now patrols the sidelines during games for Cal State San Bernardino. The name Cody was selected by a vote of the Associated Student Body in 1996.
Each quarter, the athletics department presents a Cody Coyote Award to the team that earns the highest combined grade point average for the quarter.

Tryouts
Coyote Spirit & Dance Teams recruit year-round, providing tryouts in the spring and fall. However, due to summer practices and fall sports, a majority of the team is chosen in the spring. Therefore, students and incoming freshmen are encouraged to attend tryouts in the spring so that they will be ready for the fall quarter.
