COYOTE SPIRIT HISTORY:

Coyote Spirit cheerleader program began in 1994 when three CSUSB students decided that Cal State San Bernardino's growing athletics program was in need of support and enthusiasm. The organization of the team was left up to its founders and their performances were limited to a few cheers at home basketball games.

However, since the cheer squad represented something of value and created more interest in CSUSB athletics, the Athletics Department began assisting the growth and development of Coyote Spirit. A coach/advisor was hired and tryouts were conducted in the Spring of 1995. Ten women and two men became the first organized spirit group and were given the name "Coyote Spirit."

Since 1995, the program has evolved into a co-ed group consisting of 10 to 20 members who earn their positions through annual tryouts.

For several years, the group included both cheer and dance teams, holding each members to a certain standard of performing cheers, dance routines, students and tumbling. Emphasis was placed on individual and team improvement, body conditioning and performance preparation.

Chris Moore, one of the founders of the cheer program, served as adviser/coach from 2001-02 and 2002-03.

The torch of leadership was passed on to SuzAnne McDonald, who also is the coach of the Cajon High School spirit group in San Bernardino, at the beginning of the 2003-04 season. McDonald is the cheer adviser with Cameron Faust-Silvas as the team's coach.

The spirit group has won numerous awards at cheer camps since McDonald and Faust-Silvas have taken over leadership of the program.

MASCOT -- CODY COYOTE

Cal State San Bernardino was founded in 1965 but did not field NCAA intercollegiate sports teams until 1984-85. For the first 19 years of its existent, CSUSB's official mascot was the Saint Bernard.

When CSUSB launched its intercollegiate sports program, the campus mascot was changed to the Coyote, an animal prevalent in the foothill areas behind the campus.

A furry-uniformed Coyote mascot now patrols the sidelines during games for Cal State San Bernardino -- Cody Coyote. The name Cody was selected by a vote of the Associated Student Body in 1996.

Each quarter, the athletics department presents a Cody Coyote Award to the team that earns the highest combined grade point average for the quarter.

TRYOUTS
The Coyote Spirit & Yell Team recruits year-round, providing tryouts in the spring and fall. However, due to summer practices and fall sports, a majority of the team is chosen in the spring. Therefore, students and incoming freshmen are encouraged to attend tryouts in the spring so that they will be ready for the fall quarter.
