SAN BERNARDINO (June 11, 2016) -- Tyler Wells fulfilled a childhood dream Saturday morning when he was selected by the Minnesota Twins in the 2016 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft.
The Yucaipa right-hander and all-West Region pitcher was selected in Round 15 by the Twins and is the highest selection for CSUSB since current Chicago Cub RHP Aaron Brooks was taken in Round 9 by the Kansas City Royals in 2011.
"Today is a special one for Tyler and his family, and we're very proud of Tyler,'' head coach David Martinez said. "He has worked very hard to get to this point. (Former coach) Kurt Stange played a big role in Tyler's development, and the work Tyler put into getting himself to this day showed this season.''
Wells became CSUSB's first first-team All-CCAA starting pitcher in 10 years after finishing the spring second in the conference in strikeouts (89), sixth in innings pitched (92), seventh in batting average allowed (.221) and eighth in ERA (2.84).
His strikeout total ranks fourth in school history and eighth in innings.
Wells is the first Coyote to be selected by the Twins and it is the 37th time a CSUSB player has been taken in the history of CSUSB program.
