SAN BERNARDINO (Nov. 16, 2016) — Annual appearances in the NCAA Tournament and in the nation's top 25 rankings have produced a standard when it comes to All-CCAA honors for coach
Kim Cherniss's program.
For the 15
th straight year the nationally ranked Coyotes produced at least four All-CCAA members — first-teamers
Lauren Nicholson,
Malika O'Brien and
Jayann DeHoog, and second-teamer and conference newcomer of the year
Hailey Jackson, the conference announced during its tournament banquet in Ontario on Wednesday night.
Nicholson, a junior OH from Upland, has been outstanding all season long for the Coyotes, who enter this week's CCAA Tournament as the top seed from the CCAA South at 21-4 overall and riding a conference-best 12-match winning streak into their match against North fourth-seed Cal State East Bay on Thursday night.
She ranks 10
th in the NCAA in attacks/set (12.07), 16
th kills/set (4.24) and 21
st points/set (4.64) — and all second among the CCAA. She has 14 double-doubles (kills and digs) and has five matches of 20 or more kills with a season-high (and conference best) 28 earlier this season in a 5-set win over Grand Valley State.
It is Nicholson's first conference honor.
O'Brien, who earned All-American honors last season at middle blocker, has played much of this season at OH. Her .292 attack percentage leads the Coyotes and ranks seventh in the CCAA. Her 3.10 kills/set rank ninth in the conference. She is a repeat All-CCAA selection with her first first-team honor, and has surpassed at least .350 in attack percentage in 12 matches.
She has one CCAA Player of the Week honor.
DeHoog, the AVCA West Region Freshman of the Year in 2015, was a second-team honoree a year ago. This season, she is second in the CCAA in assists/set (10.76) and second in total assists (979). She has 11 double-doubles (assists/digs) with season-bests of 55 assists (at UC San Diego) and 22 digs against Cal State L.A.
Like O'Brien, she has one CCAA Player of the Week honor.
Jackson, a sophomore transfer from the University of Montana, ranks first in the CCAA in both blocks/set (1.22) and total blocks (105). She is eighth in the CCAA in attack percentage (.287). Her 11 total blocks in the 5-set win at UC San Diego was the 12
th time in school history for a Coyote and 10 block assists were the seventh time for double digits in BA's in school history.
