Oliver signs talented class

Four Division I transfers headline 2013-14 class

Jordan Burris figures to give the Coyotes scoring and rebounding help this upcoming season.
SAN BERNARDINO – A host of talented newcomers line the 2013-14 Coyotes roster as head coach Jeff Oliver prepares for preseason practice.

"Losing an All-American like Kwame (Alexander) meant we needed to build up our roster and I think we did a pretty good job,'' Oliver said. "We created depth at both guard and in the post with guys who have proven Division I backgrounds. They've fit in rather quickly as we get ready for fall, culminating with our game at UCLA on Oct. 30.''

Among the signees are:

Senior 6-2 guard Kirby Gardner (Rialto) played one season at Oklahoma State after two outstanding seasons at nearby San Bernardino Valley College, where he earned all-state honors in 2012. Last year at OSU, he saw action in all 33 games for the NCAA Tourney Cowboys and played behind 2013 National Freshman of the Year Marcus Smart, who elected to return to Stillwater after evaluating his NBA prospects

Senior 6-7 guard Jordan Burris (Bakersfield), who played three seasons at Nevada. Burris averaged 6.8 points and 4.1 rebounds in 24-plus minutes in 2012-13. He shared Nevada's Sixth Man award with five other teammates in 2010-11.

Senior 6-8 post Andrew Young (Monterey), who played 2012-13 at Texas A&M. Young played in 32 games as a reserve for the Aggies, and contributed 2.8 points and 2.9 rebounds per contest while averaging 13.1 minutes. In 2011-12 at Monterey Peninsula College, he led the state of California in points (21.8) and rebounds (14.2) and earned all-state honors the same season as Gardner.

Senior 6-2 guard Dontè Medder (Mesa, Ariz.), who will see his first season of play for the Coyotes after three seasons at the University of Tulsa. Medder was injured for much of his sophomore and junior seasons at Tulsa (2010-12) after playing in 34 games and averaging 13 minutes in 2009-10 for the Golden Hurricanes.

Freshman 6-3 guard Khleem Perkins (San Bernardino), who averaged 25.9 points, 6.6 rebounds, 3.0 steals and 2.6 assists per game for San Bernardino High School, which won the San Andreas League title. He was an All-CIF selection for the Cardinals.

Junior 6-8 post Casey Oldemoppen (Stuart, Fla.) played 2012-13 at Saddleback College in Orange County. He played in 28 of the team's 32 games and averaged 3.8 points and 2.5 rebounds a game. He played his freshman season at Chaminade.

Junior 6-6 post Christian Cooper (Ontario) played for the 2013 California state champions at Mt. San Antonio College. He played in just 11 games and averaged a little more than 3 points a contest.

Junior 6-8 forward Tevin Harris (Dallas, Texas) did not play last season after two seasons at San Bernardino Valley College. He averaged 9.3 points and 5.4 rebounds per game during his sophomore season with SBVC while shooting 52 percent from the field and blocking 74 shots. He was also named to the All-Foothill Conference first team.

Sophomore 6-3 guard Evan Jenkins (Fontana) played one season at Barstow College under current associate head coach Reggie Howard. He averaged 7.1 points, 3.4 rebounds and 3.3 assists in 24 games.

Senior 6-2 guard Larry Thompkins III (Fontana) played one season at Mid-Continent University, an NAIA institution in Kentucky. He played in just four games before sustaining a season-ending injury.

Freshman 6-2 guard Darryl Adigwu (Fontana), who played at Etiwanda HS and helped the Eagles to the CIF-SS Division 1AA title over Mater Dei last March.
