SAN BERNARDINO – The Cal State San Bernardino volleyball team will have one more weekend this season to extend its school-record 64-match home winning streak.
The NCAA Division II volleyball committee Sunday selected top-ranked CSUSB to play host to the 2011 NCAA Division II Volleyball Championship, to be held Dec. 1-3 at CSUSB's Coussoulis Arena.
The Coyotes last hosted the finals in 2003. It marks just the third time since 1997 that the finals will be played on the West Coast.
“Over the last three years, it was difficult to play without our girls' friends and families, without my family, in attendance,'' head coach
Kim Cherniss said. “To have the opportunity to perform at home, having the support of friends, family and our campus is going to be very special. This is a tremendous honor and we look forward to putting our best foot forward.''
The Coyotes, who are 30-0 and the nation's only unbeaten team, will play Flagler (Fla.) at 7:30 p.m. Dec. 1. Flagler, 29-6 overall, upset the top seed in the Southeast, Wingate, 3-2 on Sunday.
“They are a talented team that fought back from some tight spots against the only other unbeaten team in the country,'' Cherniss said about her team's first-round match. “We'll have to be prepared to play well against a solid team right off the bat.''
The tournament begins with Tampa taking on Bridgeport (Conn.) at noon. That will be followed by the 2:30 p.m. match featuring four-time defending NCAA champion Concordia-St. Paul (31-2) against Central Missouri (30-4).
Preceding CSUSB's opening-round match will be Midwest champion Hillsdale (Mich.) against Atlantic representative Wheeling Jesuit.
