Men's soccer tabbed for 2nd in CCAA South

Sonoma State, Dominguez Hills picked as division winners by coaches

    WALNUT CREEK — Cal State San Bernardino, coming off a solid 15-6-1 record in 2009, was tabbed for second place in the CCAA South Division of men's soccer in a coaches poll released Tuesday. 
    The Coyotes were also tabbed to be one of as many as eight potential participants in the four-team CCAA conference championship tournament, but did not receive any votes when coaches were asked to pick a tournament champion. 
    Sonoma State and defending conference champion Cal State Dominguez Hills have been selected to win their respective divisions in the upcoming CCAA season. 
    Sonoma State was also the coaches' picks to claim the 2010 CCAA Tournament title after receiving six votes. Cal State Dominguez Hills garnered three votes, Cal Poly Pomona received two votes and Cal State Stanislaus was named on one ballot. 

    Sonoma State was picked to repeat as North Division champion after receiving 65 points and 10 first-place votes. Cal State Stanislaus collected 61 points and one first-place vote and Chico State (43) was picked third after collecting one first-place vote. Humboldt State (34) was fourth and followed by Cal State Monterey Bay and San Francisco State, who tied for fifth with 20 points apiece. 

    Cal State Dominguez Hills, coming off its ninth CCAA championship, was the coaches' pick to win the South Division after totaling 58 points and six first-place votes. Cal State San Bernardino finished second in the balloting after collecting 54 points and four first-place votes. Cal State L.A. was third with 47 points and Cal Poly Pomona was fourth with 42 points. The Golden Eagles and Broncos each received one first-place vote. 

    The National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) tabbed the Toros to be ranked No. 4 in the pre-season national Division II poll while Cal State L.A. was ranked 14th, Sonoma State 22nd and the Coyotes 25th. 
    UC San Diego placed fifth with 28 points and Cal State East Bay (14) was sixth. 

    Led by Sonoma State, which totaled 10 points, eight teams received at least one vote in balloting for predicting CCAA Tournament participants. Joining the Seawolves were Cal State Dominguez Hills (9), Cal State San Bernardino (8), Cal State L.A. (6), Cal State Stanislaus (6), Cal Poly Pomona (4), Chico State (4) and Humboldt State (1). 

    Cal State Stanislaus, for the second year in a row, will host the CCAA Championship Tournament that is scheduled for Nov. 5-7 in Turlock. 

    Four CCAA teams begin 2010 ranked in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) national preseason Top 25. Cal State Dominguez Hills is ranked No. 6 and followed by No. 12 Cal State L.A., No. 22 Sonoma State and No. 25 Cal State San Bernardino. 

    The 2010 regular season gets underway on Thursday, Sept. 2, with the Coyotes taking on Saint Martin's University of Lacey, Wash., at Grand Canyon University in Phoenix.
