Gaining Ground

Torres, along with her doubles partner Palicte, have won two straight doubles matches.

SAN BERNARDINO — Christina Torres and Janay Palicte combined to win their second straight doubles match as Cal State San Bernardino fell, 6-3, to Sonoma State.

Torres and Palicte led the Coyotes (0-6) to an 8-6 win over Haley Hickock and Jessica Harris at No. 2 doubles. Stephanie Luk and Molly Maguire defeated Isabella Fraczek and Allison Brooks, 8-3, at No. 1 singles while Stephanie Hoffmire and Jeanette Peck downed Brittany Choate and Michelle Mau, 8-1, at No. 2 as the Seawolves captured the other two doubles matches.

Palicte and Fraczek also won their singles matches as Palicte won in straight sets, 7-6 (7-1), 6-2, over Hickock at No. 2 singles and Fraczek won by default over Peck at No. 3 singles. Fraczek won the first set 7-6 (7-4) and was trailing 2-3 when Peck forfeited with a shoulder injury.

Sonoma State won the other four singles matches. Luk beat Choate, 6-1, 6-1, at No. 1 singles and Maguire won, 6-3, 6-3, over Kara Jenkins at No. 4. Hoffmire and Harris then defeated Torres and Brooks at No. 5 and No. 6 singles. Hoffmire needed a tiebreaker in the first set to beat Torres 7-6 (7-4) in the first set before winning the second 6-4. Harris also downed Brooks in straight sets, 6-3, 6-1.
