RIVERSIDE -- Taylor Siemens allowed only one run on six hits and two Cal Baptist relievers pitched a scoreless and hitless 2.1 innings as Cal Baptist defeated Cal State San Bernardino, 7-1, in the Coyotes season opener at Totman Stadium.
The Lancers are now 4-1 on the season while the Coyotes take a 0-1 record into the first round of the John Scolinos Memorial Tournament on Thursday, facing Cal State L.A. at 2 p.m. at the Major League Baseball Urban Academy in Compton.
CSUSB Head Coach Don Parnell used eight pitchers in the game but after the Lancers took a 2-0 lead through four innings, they picked on junior transfer Chris Mieszala for four runs, three of them earned in the fifth inning for a 6-0 lead on three hits and a Coyote error.
The Coyotes got their lone run in the seventh as junior transfer Erik Ornelas doubled driving in Brent Planck, but Mike Barro came on in relief of Siemens to get Cody Madison to fly out and strand Ornelas at second base.
Senior Daniel Stenavich, who gave up a run in the second inning, was credited with the loss while Siemens improved to 2-0 on the season.
Junior transfer Lucas Sanford, Garrett Nelsen and Carlos Nakamura combined to pitch three innings of two-hit relief against the Lancers. Nelson retired the side on nine pitchers in the seventh and Nakamura allowed one hit but struck out one and delivered just eight pitches to retire the side in the eighth.
