RIVERSIDE --
Lenzie Quist scored three goals and goalkeeper
Bryanna Burns stopped 14 shots Friday as Cal State San Bernardino won its first water polo match of the season, 8-4, over Claremont-Mudd-Scripps at the Cal Baptist tournament.
The Coyotes put forth another solid effort against 17th-ranked Cal State Bakersfield, a fellow member of the Western Water Polo Association, in their second match, losing 10-7 to the Roadrunners.
Cal State San Bernardino held its own against the Roadrunners, considered one of the top teams in the WWPA this season, trailing 3-2 after one quarter and 6-3 at halftime.
In the third period, goals by Quist,
Kaitlin Hartman and
Teresa Martinez enabled the Coyotes to close the gap to two points, 8-6, with one quarter remaining. However, the Roadrunners held off CSUSB for the win as
Kelsey Morino provided the final Coyotes goal.
Burns had 13 goals against Bakersfield giving her 27 on the day.
"We came together as a team today," said Coach
Sarah Reneker. "After a long, hard week of practice, I was impressed by our effort."
CSUSB took a 2-1 lead after one period and improved on it to 3-1 at halftime as Burns and her teammates kept CMS scoreless. The Coyotes came out strong after the break and outscored CMS 5-1 in the third period to take an 8-2 lead over a team ranked No. 5 in NCAA Division III.
Quist's "hat trick" was a matter of being in the right place at the right time, Reneker said. "She kept moving and doing her job. One of her goals came during a 6 on 5. She's really long so she can get up higher than defenders when she shoots." The 5-9 sophomore transferred to CSUSB from BYU.
Scoring one goal each for CSUSB were Hartman, Martinez,
Emily Hove,
Ashley deJonckheere and
Misty Vu.
Martinez had two goals against Bakersfield while Hartman, Quist,
Marilyn Doughty, Morino and Vu each scored one.
On Saturday at Cal Baptist, the Coyotes will take on Azusa Pacific at 11:45 a.m. followed by a match against Fresno Pacific at 2:15. CSUSB will close out the week on Sunday at University of Redlands, facing Pomona-Pitzer, ranked No. 1 in NCAA Division III, at 11:30 a.m. and the host Bulldogs, ranked No. 3 in D-3, at 2:30 p.m. Both matches will be at the Thompson Aquatic Center adjacent to the football stadium.
