RIVERSIDE -- Freshman
Samantha Borman ran one of the fastest 5,000 meter cross country races in the history of the Cal State San Bernardino program Saturday, posting an 18:35.6 time at the UC Riverside Highlander Invitational.
Her time puts her in the top five on the CSUSB all-time 5K list. CSUSB wound up 23rd in a highly-competitve 27-team race that featured 217 runners, but as a team, the Coyotes averaged 19:19.4 over the UCR Agriculture Farm course, one of their best showings in recent years.
Host UCR won the race. CCAA members Cal State L.A. and Cal Poly Pomona finished 13th and 15th respectively. CSUSB finished ahead of Cal State Bakersfield, Regis University, Cal Baptist and Cal State Dominguez Hills.
Borman has been the team's fastest runner in their first three meets. Competing against a stellar field, Borman finished 83rd overall while teammate
Anjuli Nieto was the next CSUSB runner into the finish chute in 19:20.3, good for 127th spot. Freshman
Deserae Perez was 138th in 19:29.4. Freshman
Rebekah Frazier was 141st in 19:31.6 and freshman
Courtney Ciraulo was 147th in 19:40.5.
Sophomore
Niki Chesnut, the team's No. 1 runner in 2008, finished 148th in 19:41.5.
Angelica Lopez also broke 20 minutes with 19:59.5 clocking.
Shawna Alvarez was the eighth CSUSB runner to finish in 21:08.3.
"We didn't place great but as a team we had seven runners under 20 minutes," said Head Coach
Tom Burleson. "I believe that's the first time we've done that in a meet in the history of the program. It was a great team effort."
The meet was divided into two divisions due to the number of runners. The Coyotes finished 14th in that 5K run that featured 165 runners and 15 teams.
Candace Galusha was CSUSB's best runner in that race, finishing 45th in 20:42.1.
Sierra Morris was next, in 67th spot at 21:28.3, followed by
Vanessa Graff,
Kindra Funch,
Gaby Neblina, Liz McConaughey and
Jennifer Garcia.
The meet's top runner honors went to Jackie Kipwambok of Azusa Pacific, who blistered the 5K course in a fast time of 16:29.4. The top CCAA conference finisher was Cal State L.A.'s Vivian Wadeck, the defending CCAA champion, who was eighth in 17:17.4.
