Danny Scott, the associate head coach for Cal State San Bernardino's women's volleyball team, has been selected as the first-ever recipient of the American Volleyball Coaches Association Division II "National Assistant Coach of the Year" award.
Scott has been an assistant coach or associate head coach for the Coyotes for 11 years, mirroring the team's rise to national prominence in the sport.
In its official news release, the AVCA said Scott was "instrumental in helping the Coyotes to their second consecutive NCAA Division II West Region championship and second straight appearance in the NCAA Division II Tournament semifinals."
The Coyotes finished the season 33-2 and captured their fourth straight California Collegiate Athletic Association title with a 21-1 mark. Both win marks were all-time program highs since the Coyotes moved up to Division II in 1991-92.
Scott was nominated for the inaugural award by Head Coach Kim Cherniss. The two of them have been partners in the growth and development of the volleyball program at CSUSB and in operating the successful Rancho Valley Volleyball Club for age-group youths.
CSUSB has won seven CCAA titles and four West Region titles and competed in 10 straight regional title matches dating back to 2000.
Scott graduated from CSUSB with a degree in kinesiology and played on the Coyotes' men's volleyball team after transferring to the campus from San Diego Mesa College. He served as Cherniss' assistant in 1997 and 1999 before taking time off to get his post-graduate degree in 2000. He rejoined the staff in 2001.
He is married to former Coyotes volleyball player Mary Thornton. The couple and their twin children live in Hesperia.
AVCA also named Jody Butera of the University of Indianapolis as the 2009 AVCA./NCAA Division II head coach of the year. Butera led the Greyhounds to a 38-2 record and the quarterfinals of the national tournament, the best season in the history of the program.
