SAN FRANCISCO -- Cal State San Bernardino finished 17th in a 25-team NCAA West Regional 6K meet Saturday at Golden Gate Park, led by freshman Samantha Borman's 48th place finish in the field of 161 runners.
Borman ran a career best 23:12.9 in the race on aptly named Speedway Meadow to finish 30 spots ahead of CSUSB's No. 2 runner, freshman Rebekah Frazier, who finished in 23:52.3. Sophomore Niki Chesnut was 84th in 23:56.2.
Rounding out the top five for the Coyotes were freshman Deserae Perez, 98th in 24:13.2 and senior Anjuli Nieto, in 106th place, timed in 24:23.5. Freshman Courtney Ciraulo was a non-scoring 114th in 24:36.0 followed by senior Angelica Lopez in 127th spot in 25:13.4.
Borman finished 3:04 behind the regional individual champion, Jessica Pixler of Seattle Pacific, who won the race by 32 seconds in 20:08.9. University of Alaska Anchorage scored 35 points to take the team title, upsetting region No. 1 Chico State, which finished second with 58 points.
The Seawolves of UAA placed four runners in the top 10 while Chico placed all five of its runners in the top 16 but fell short. Cal Poly Pomona was fifth and UC San Diego was seventh.
CSUSB's spacing was not that bad. The five top Coyote runners were just 1:10.6 apart over the 6,000-meter course.
