Martin Esqueda was voted the California Collegiate Athletic Association "freshman of the year" by the CCAA soccer coaches and teammates
Albert Cabrera and
Ryan Larson were both voted to the all-CCAA first team, it was announced Thursday by the CCAA office.
Those three joined four other Coyotes who were selected for all-CCAA honors, a tribute to the team's 15-4-1 season, 11-4-1 in the CCAA and berth in Friday's CCAA tournament semifinals.
Esqueda, a freshman from Montclair (Montclair HS), appeared in 16 matches and became a starter following an injury to sophomore
Brett Faggioni. He assisted on one goal during the season but proved himself as a defender-midfielder enough to impress the CCAA coaches.
Cabrera, an Ontario resident in his third season, has enjoyed a monster year with 12 goals and seven assists for 31 points thus far. Larson, an Upland resident, also in his third season with the Coyotes as a defender, scored one goal but was most valuable at muting opponent attacks on defense.
Earning second-team all-CCAA honors were junior forward
Obi Agwu who scored nine goals and assisted on three others for 21 points, and
Mark Peters, a senior from Fontana, who helped fortify the back line after three outstanding seasons at Azusa Pacific, helping the Cougars win a NAIA national title. Peters had one goal and assisted on two others.
Honorable mention honors went to senior midfielder
Jeremiah Marquez (Menifee) who had one goal and six assists on the regular season, and sophomore
Billy Pellow (Highland) who had three goals and two assists in 18 matches.
Victor Regalado of Cal State Stanislaus was voted offensive MVP of the CCAA while Kevin Gallaugher of Cal State Dominguez Hills was the defensive MVP. Goalkeeper Markus Dickerson of the Toros was voted "newcomer of the year" and Chris Chamides of Cal State L.A. was voted coach of the year.
