CCAA conference most valuable player Sylvia Schmidt had a match-high 19 kills Thursday to lead UC San Diego to a 3-0 sweep of San Francisco State in an NCAA Division II West Region volleyball quarterfinal match at Cal State San Bernardino.
The Tritons improve to 29-2 on the season and advance to the semifinals at 5 p.m. on Friday to face Cal State L.A., a 3-2 winner over Sonoma State earlier in the day. San Francisco State concludes its season with a 20-11 record.
Schmidt hit .351 for the match on 37 swings and picked up two block assists. Hillary Williamson chipped in 10 kills on .474 hitting with seven digs. Setter Elaine Chen had 37 assists as the Tritons hit .330 for the match while SFSU was held to just .117 hitting.
Beth Perkins led the Gators with 13 kills on 38 swings. Iris Tolenada, the CCAA freshman of the year, had 22 assists, 10 digs and three block assists.
One of the top serving teams in the country, UCSD had nine aces, three by Chen, as they atoned for a 3-1 defeat at the hands of the Gators in CCAA conference play on Nov. 6.
“I felt we had a good start,” said UCSD Head Coach Tom Black. “Hitting it in and serving it in.”
Regarding the loss at the Gators gym, Black said, "We saw some mistakes that we wanted to get better at. The girls did well making the adjustments."
