POMONA -- Cal Poly Pomona rebounded from a 4-1 thumping at the hands of Cal State San Bernardino Friday with a 2-0 shutout of the Coyotes Sunday on Senior Day at the Broncos field in the CCAA conference, regular-season finale for both teams.
However, the Coyotes will be moving on to the CCAA championship tournament starting Friday at Cal State Stanislaus as the No. 2 seed and will face 2008 NCAA Div. II champion Cal State Dominguez Hills, the No. 3 seed, at 4:30 p.m. Friday. No. 1 seed Cal State L.A. will play No. 4 seed Sonoma State at 7 p.m.
CSUSB winds up the regular season 15-4-1 overall, matching the second-best record in the history of the program first set in 1990, and 11-4-1 in the CCAA conference, the team's best record ever in conference play since joining the CCAA in 1991.
Cal Poly Pomona ended its season 10-8-1 overall and 8-7-1 in the CCAA.
The Coyotes had enough chances to win the match, taking 21 recorded shots, of which 11 were on goal and required saves by the three goalkeepers that the Broncos employed. Fifteen of CSUSB's shots were attempted in the final 45 minutes.
After a scoreless first half, Pomona broke through in the 65th minute on Kevin Ramirez' fifth goal of the season off an assist by Tyler Rinehart. Six minutes later Miguel Abascal tallied his fifth goal of the season on a penalty kick.
Arath DeLaRocha had four saves in goal for CSUSB as the Broncos attempted 12 shots, six of which were on goal. Brad Jones, Chris Otani and Thomas Ryan combined for 11 saves for the Broncos.
