Junior forward Albert Cabrera scored two goals Friday as Cal State San Bernardino erupted for three second half goals on Senior Day at Coyote Premier Field to defeat Cal Poly Pomona, 4-1, in a CCAA men's soccer contest.
The victory improved the Coyotes to 15-3-1 on the season equaling the soccer program's second best win record set in 1990. CSUSB is 11-3-1 in the CCAA and has already been assured of a berth in the CCAA conference tournament on Nov. 5-8. The Broncos are now 9-8-1 overall, 7-7-1 in the CCAA.
The two teams close out the regular season on Sunday with a 3 p.m. match at the Broncos field.
Cabrera's two goals gives him 12 on the season and his point total of 31 ties him with Johnny Richardson (2003) for fourth place on the all-time Coyotes single-season points list.
The 11 conference wins to date is an all-time single-season record.
CSUSB entered the match ranked No. 3 in the NCAA West Region and No. 21 in the nation and the win over the Broncos will hopefully solidify a spot in the West Regional which begins the week following the conference tournament. The final selection will be made Nov. 8.
The Coyotes took a 1-0 lead in the ninth minute of the first half as Cabrera accepted a through ball from junior forward Obi Agwu and blistered a hard shot off his right foot inside the near post, winding up in the far corner of the net.
The Broncos held their own the balance of the half but the Coyotes got rolling again in the second half.
Sophomore Billy Pellow scored his third goal of the season on a header from a cross by senior Danny Rodriguez, the CCAA player of the week in the 56th minute. A minute later, freshman Demetri Burgos beat several defenders for his second goal of the season after being fed the ball by junior Jose Godinez for a 3-0 lead.
Cal Poly Pomona responded in the 68th minute on Miguel Abascal's unassisted goal inside the far post, beating CSUSB goalkeeper Arath DeLaRocha.
Two minutes later it was Cabrera, collecting a pass from Godinez, making a quick turn and then blasting a left-footed shot into the near corner of the net past Broncos keeper Thomas Ryan for a 4-1 advantage.
CSUSB outshot the Broncos 15-9. Ryan made six saves. DeLaRocha made three saves in 80 minutes and was replaced by freshman Tanner Olinger who stopped one shot and punted the ball well into the forward half on two occasions to slow down the Broncos attempt at a comeback.
It was the final home match of the season for six Coyotes seniors -- Ryan Larson, Rodriguez, Mark Peters, Brock Steele, Daniel McElroy and Jeremiah Marquez. Marquez sat out the game due to illness. CSUSB was 8-2-1 at home this season.
The Broncos will honor their seniors on Sunday.
