IRVINE – Freshman Nikki Chesnut ran 20:17.9 to lead Cal State San Bernardino's women's cross country team to a ninth-place finish among 16 teams in the Asics/UC Irvine Collegiate Cross Country Invitational 5,000 meter run Saturday at the UCI campus course.
Chesnut finished 27th in the field of 159 runners followed in 36th place by senior
Kari Brandt, who ran 20:48.8. Seven CSUSB runners finished in the top 63.
Southwestern Community College won the team title with four runners in the top 10 followed by Pomona Pitzer, UC Santa Cruz, Cerritos, Cal Baptist, Cal Lutheran, Occidental, Long Beach City College and the Coyotes.
Following Chesnut and Brandt into the finish chute for the Coyotes were
Anjuli Nieto, 61st in 21:15.5;
Marlene Malagon, 65th in 21:29.2, and
Shawna Alvarez in 21:35. 5.
Eight other Coyotes also ran in the event.
Mikayla Murphy of UC Santa Cruz was the individual winner of the 5K race in 18:21.3.
