REDLANDS -- Cal State San Bernardino's women's cross country team, in its first 6,000 meter race of the 2008 season, finished in eighth place out of 11 teams at the University of Redlands Invitational on Saturday.
Freshman Nikki Chesnut was the best runner for the Coyotes for the second week in a row, winding up 26th in the field of 131 runners in a time of 25:08.9 in her first collegiate race at this distance. Senior captain
Kari Brandt was the No. 2 CSUSB runner to finish, in 35th spot, timed in 25:27.4.
Anjuli Nieto was 47th in 25:51.5.
Angelica Lopez was 59th in 26:34.5.
Shawna Alvarez was 65th in 26:47.1, followed closely by Alena Mohd-Yusof (66th) and Kristin Torrez (67th).
Marlene Malagon was in 90th place.
NCAA Division III schools captured the first six spots in the event led by meet champion Pomona Pitzer with 39 points. Claremont-Mudd Scripps was second at 48 and UC Santa Cruz third with 86 points. The Coyotes had 195 points. Mikayla Murphy of UC Santa Cruz was the individual champion, timed in 22:36.4.
CSUSB will host the Coyotes Invitational 6K-8K run on Saturday at Glen Helen Regional Park in Devore. The women's race starts at 9 a.m. and the men's race at 9:45 a.m. It is the same course that will be used for the 2008 California Collegiate Athletic Assn. championship on Oct. 25.
