Cal State San Bernardino's men's basketball team, looking to continue its decade of success in NCAA Division II, is still looking for recruits who can contribute in 2008-09, but Head Coach Jeff Oliver and Associate Head Coach Paul Trevor have signed four players they expect to be key contributors to the team.
Foremost among those signed is Brandon Brown, a 6-7 junior forward who had a tremendous year at Holmes Community College in Goodman, Miss. where he averaged 27 points and 13 rebounds a game for a team that went 16-8.
Brown, a New Orleans native, scored 38 points in a Holmes victory over Jones County (Miss) JC and a loss to Northwest Mississippi JC and 35 against Arkansas Baptist College.
Also in the fold for 2008-09 are:
-- Larry DeHughes, a 6-4 junior guard, a transfer from Fullerton Community College where he averaged 12 points and six rebounds a game for the Hornets, helping them win the Orange Empire Conference title and advance to the 2008 state JC championship game. The Hornets went 28-6. DeHughes played at Compton College as a freshman. He was a first-team all-Orange Empire Conference selection.
-- Lawrence Tyson, a 6-2 point junior point guard, a transfer from Northeastern Junior College in Colorado after playing his freshman season at Cal State Northridge. The Lancaster resident played his high school ball at Quartz Hill HS. He played in 16 games as a freshman at Northridge. His Northeastern team went 30-4 in 2007-08.
-- Michael Frazier, a 6-4 forward-guard who played at Northern Colorado in 2003-04 after transferring from Mount San Jacinto College. Frazier averaged 12.2 points as the team's No. 2 scorer that season and shot 39 percent from three-point range. He averaged 2.4 rebounds and 23 minutes of playing time per game for the Bears.
Joining these three will be two outstanding CSUSB players who redshirted in 2007-08:
-- Tim Denson, a 6-1 junior guard who transferred from Colorado State University. Denson started 29 games for the Rams in 2006-07, averaging 8.4 points and 2.8 rebounds a game with 55 assists and 37 steals. Denson was the MVP of the Fullerton JC team that won the state JC title in 2006 during a 37-0 season. He is a graduate of Corona High School.
-- Jordan Richard, a 6-9 freshman center from Los Osos High School in Rancho Cucamonga who gained valuable experience practicing behind 6-8 Michael Earl in 2007-08.
They will join one starter (Philip Jones) and several reserves from last year's Coyotes team that captured a California Collegiate Athletic Association co-championship (the team's seventh title in the past nine seasons) and advanced to the NCAA West Region quarterfinals, finishing with a 22-8 record.
The other returnees include 6-7 post player Devon Davis, 6-5 forward Reggie Brown, 6-6 forward Ryan Kinney and 6-1 guard Steve Gaston.
"The window is still open. We're still looking at some players who we think can be significant contributors to our team," said Oliver.
