Senior Freyja Berg has become the first women's water polo player in the history of the Cal State San Bernardino program to be selected to the Association of Collegiate Water Polo Coaches NCAA Division II all-America first team for the third year in a row. The team was released Wednesday.
Berg, who received her bachelor's degree in chemistry last weekend as a member of the Class of 2008, was also a first-team all-Western Water Polo Association and a WWPA all-tournament team choice during this season. She was also named CSUSB's Female Athlete of the Year for 2007-08.
Only CSUSB volleyball player Kim Morohunfola has more all-America honors than Berg in the history of CSUSB athletics dating back to 1984-85. Morohunfola was a four-time American Volleyball Coaches Assn. all-American and the 2003 AVCA Player of the Year in NCAA Division II.
Berg led all NCAA and NAIA schools in scoring this past season with 110 goals, a feat that enabled her to be honored in Sports Illustrated's "Faces in the Crowd" feature on June 9.
She scored seven goals in a 13-12 upset win over Division I UC Santa Barbara in April.
The former La Serna High School (Whittier) star set CSUSB water polo career records for goals scored (356), assists (172), and steals (269).
Joining Berg on the all-America first team were Chelsea Laning of Cal State Monterey Bay and five UC San Diego players -- Sydney Gstettenbauer, Kim Hockett, Judy Emaus, Nicole Herman and Stephanie Bocian. Hockett was named the Div. II player of the year. UCSD Coach Larry Sanders was named coach of the year.
